Each year as the summer comes to a close, the routines of the school year can help to add structure for your family and your adolescent. Consider building a daily or weekly family time into the schedule that allows for ongoing discussions about adjustments to the new grade level, teachers, peers, classes, etc. If your teen is not in school, these discussions can be about other topics such as his/her job or plans for the week. Structuring as much time as possible is helpful for your teenager even if they won't admit it, because it gives them less decisions to make about their own free time that often gets detoured into negative behaviors. And no matter what they say, most kids like it when you show an interest in their lives.
