July, 2006
by Shannon K. Spellman, M.S.W.
Adolescents are somewhat like the 4th of July every day. They can be explosive and beautiful all in the same moment, they take simple little things and blow them way up out of proportion, and they can waltz in with a bang or fizzle with disappointment. This moodiness is called adolescence. Seek support and help for yourself in not reacting to these emotional and hormonal changes. When kids become engulfed with excessive substance abuse, ongoing depression, violence or self-harm, it's time to seek help for your adolescent and your family system to determine what steps need to be taken to restore balance and help your teen more gently pass through this life cycle stage of developing identity and independence.
