July, 2009
by Shannon K. Spellman, M.S.W.
July is the month we celebrate Independence in the USA. Adolescence is the stage we celebrate moving towards independence. As parents, you can either facilitate your teen's successful accomplishment of this life-cycle stage or you can enable them to stay stuck and prevent them from achieving independence.
For instance, does your teenager have and use an alarm clock or do you make sure your adolescent is up and out of bed everyday? Teens who can't get up on their own are likely to still be living at home in their 20's. Do you want that?
Achieving independence is the necessary step to accomplishing the task of moving through adolescence. Are you helping or hindering?
