by Shannon K. Spellman, M.S.W.

How do you measure up as a role model?  Are you making responsible decisions yourself around drinking, sexual activity, driving, money, food, sleep, work, etc.?  Are you setting a good example for healthy relationships and constructive conflict resolution?  You can only expect your teenager to act as healthy as you are today.

If you see flaws in your own behavior, it is never too late to correct them.  Share your awareness with your adolescent and make a commitment for positive change.  They will respect your honesty much more than any attempt at pretending to be healthier than you are.  You can even involve them in confronting you when they see you engage in old behaviors.
