June, 2009

by Shannon K. Spellman, M.S.W.

Summer is that time where adolescents seem to believe that sleeping all day is normal and reasonable. Parents are often at a loss of how to deal with this one.

Some sort of structure at least for part of the week is usually best. So, you might allow them to sleep in for a set number of days in the week, and the on the other days require them to be up and doing something productive.

When they want to know what's in it for them, just tell them they will be allowed to go out with their friends that evening if they get up when they are supposed to and they won't if they don't.
