March, 2007

by Shannon K. Spellman, M.S.W.

March is a month typically focused on Spring Break for many teens and the traditional idea of a family vacation has somehow turned into a wild excursion that many teens believe they ought to have like some college students are engaging in.  As a responsible parent, you are encouraged to set boundaries that give your teen a clear message that this is simply something they will have to wait to do when they are older.  Don't attempt to give long lectures about appropriate behavior as they are unlikely to agree with you.  Just say "No" and mean it.  Offer alternative suggestions that they can choose from or make a plan on your own for your family and require them to go.
