March, 2009

by Shannon K. Spellman, M.S.W.

Have you taught you kids the importance of balance in work and play? We teach best when we role-model appropriate behavior. So, ask yourself if you tend to work too much and are play starved or if you tend to play a lot and neglect your responsibilities.

Kids pay attention to what the adults in the lives are doing even if they don't comment on it. Having too rigid of standards for high achievement can be just as damaging as being too much of a partier and appearing irresponsible.

Find a balance for yourselves and encourage your adolescents to find their own balance between work and play.
