As the school year begins to unwind, begin to engage your teen in planning for some type of structure during the summer. Whether it's a job, volunteer work, a leadership camp, or some other activity, structure decreases the amount of time available for getting into mischief and developing unhealthy habitual patterns. Rather than asking them if they want to do it at all, return to the technique used with younger children of allowing them to choose between which activity they want.
