May, 2006
by Shannon K. Spellman, M.S.W.
May is often a time of celebration and graduations as teens achieve various levels of academic success. These times, like all rights of passage, are extremely important to honor as you help your teen to be proud of his/her accomplishments and give younger children visions of success.
If you have a teen who hasn't been successful academically and won't be having this type of celebration, consider creating a unique way of honoring your teen's success such as a party or family get together to congratulate your teen for securing and holding a job for a certain period of time, or showing off a special talent such as mechanical skills. Your teenager needs to feel your pride and have their successes acknowledged in order to value achievement.
