by Shannon K. Spellman, M.S.W.

As the school year winds down, it is once again important to consider how to help your teen structure time during the summer months. If your adolescent doesn't already have activities planned, consider engaging in some summer dreams discussions that offer freedom of choice and creativity but also ultimately structure to the daily routine.

Time without any structure is an invitation for trouble with adolescents. Help your teens avoid this over the summer.  Remember to do this in a manner that allows them to come up with their own ideas about what to do and how to accomplish that. Otherwise, they are likely to resist your suggestions.
